Launched as Part of BINECA 2025 with the Theme “Designing a Sustainable Industry: Circular Economy and Green Growth”

Jakarta, December 4, 2025 – The Industrial Engineering Program of BINUS University, through the Industrial Engineering Student Association (HIMTRI), officially introduced SCOTERA (Sustainable Clean Optimized Transport Eco Ride Advance), an ergonomically designed electric vehicle developed by students, during the Bina Nusantara Industrial Engineering Competition Arena (BINECA) 2025 held at the Auditorium of BINUS @Kemanggisan Anggrek Campus.

The launch of SCOTERA became one of the highlights of BINECA 2025, HIMTRI’s annual flagship event, which this year carried the theme “Designing a Sustainable Industry: Circular Economy and Green Growth.” The theme was chosen in response to the growing global and national urgency to develop more sustainable and environmentally responsible industries. SCOTERA serves as a tangible representation of this vision while demonstrating the commitment of BINUS Industrial Engineering students to sustainable mobility and the future of green transportation in Indonesia.

Two days after its launch, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the BINECA 2025 committee organized the SCOTERA Trial Workshop and SCOTERA Design & Technology Workshop at Anggrek Campus Plaza. During these sessions, participants were introduced to SCOTERA as an ergonomic electric vehicle designed for urban commuters, learned about its operation and safety features, and had the opportunity to test ride the vehicle to experience its performance, comfort, and stability firsthand.

Understanding the Concept and Technology Behind SCOTERA

SCOTERA was designed not merely as an electric transportation device, but as a comprehensive mobility solution that integrates sustainability, ergonomics, and safety. The following are some of the key features that distinguish SCOTERA.

Electric Power as an Environmentally Friendly Energy Source

SCOTERA is powered by a rechargeable battery-based electric propulsion system. This approach was selected because electricity is a clean energy source that produces no direct exhaust emissions during operation. Recharging can conveniently be performed at home or at nearby charging facilities whenever the battery level is low. From an operational perspective, this solution is significantly more efficient than conventional fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, supporting the transition toward greener and more economical transportation.

Aluminum 6061 Frame and Solid Laminated Bamboo: Lightweight, Durable, and Sustainable

The main structure of SCOTERA utilizes a round hollow tube frame made from Aluminum 6061. This material was selected for its optimal combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight properties, contributing to enhanced vehicle stability while reducing energy consumption during operation.

To reinforce its sustainability value, SCOTERA also incorporates solid laminated bamboo tubes in selected frame components. The use of bamboo provides a natural aesthetic and strengthens the vehicle’s environmentally friendly identity without compromising structural integrity, as the primary load-bearing function remains supported by the aluminum frame.

Seated Scooter Design for Enhanced Comfort

SCOTERA adopts a seated scooter configuration rather than a standing scooter design. This decision was made because not all users are accustomed to maintaining balance on standing scooters for extended periods.

The seated design significantly improves comfort, enhances body stability, and minimizes fatigue in the back, wrists, and knees. It also increases confidence among first-time users, making SCOTERA more inclusive and accessible across various age groups. From an ergonomic perspective, maintaining a proper seated posture helps preserve natural body alignment, creating a safer and more relaxed riding experience, particularly for medium-distance travel.

Ergonomic Dimensions Based on Indonesian Anthropometric Data

During the design process, every vehicle dimension was carefully analyzed using Indonesian anthropometric data collected in 2023, covering male and female users aged 17–47 years. The minimum age of 17 was selected because it corresponds to the legal minimum age for obtaining a driving license in Indonesia.

Most ergonomic dimensions were developed using the 50th percentile (P50) measurements, including:

  • Sitting shoulder height
  • Upper and lower arm length
  • Hand length
  • Knee length
  • Popliteal length
  • Forward shoulder-to-hand grip reach distance

The use of P50 measurements ensures that the vehicle comfortably accommodates the majority of the population. For dimensions requiring greater adaptability, such as saddle height, a range between P5 and P95 was applied, allowing seat adjustments to accommodate various user heights. As a result, SCOTERA delivers consistent comfort for a broad spectrum of Indonesian users.

Front and Rear Suspension System for Improved Ride Quality

SCOTERA is equipped with a dual suspension system, featuring both front and rear suspension units. This configuration provides excellent shock absorption, particularly when traveling on uneven road surfaces.

The front suspension enhances steering stability, while the rear suspension effectively absorbs vibrations and impacts, resulting in a smoother, safer, and more comfortable riding experience.

Safety Features: Headlights, Turn Signals, Mirrors, and Horn

To ensure safe operation on public roads, SCOTERA incorporates a comprehensive set of safety features, including:

  • Front headlight for maximum visibility during nighttime riding
  • Turn signals and rear lights for directional and positional signaling
  • Rear-view mirrors for monitoring surrounding traffic conditions
  • Horn for communication with other road users

These features strengthen SCOTERA’s position as an electric vehicle that prioritizes not only comfort but also safety and practicality for modern urban commuters.

Foldable Handlebar for Storage Convenience

The handlebar of SCOTERA is designed with a folding mechanism, a feature particularly relevant to urban mobility needs. This foldable design allows the vehicle to occupy less space when stored in apartments, offices, or when transported using public transportation. It provides additional flexibility for users with limited storage space while maintaining the benefits of personal mobility.

Key Advantages of SCOTERA

  • 100% electric-powered, environmentally friendly, efficient, and economical.
  • Lightweight and durable Aluminum 6061 frame complemented by eco-friendly bamboo elements.
  • Seated scooter design for universal comfort.
  • Ergonomic dimensions tailored to Indonesian anthropometric characteristics.
  • Dual suspension system for enhanced stability and riding comfort.
  • Comprehensive safety features.
  • Foldable handlebar for flexible storage and transportation.

BINECA 2025: A Platform for Innovation and Student Collaboration

In addition to the launch of SCOTERA and its accompanying workshops, BINECA 2025 also featured a Business Case Competition themed “Clean Future Business: Building Profits with Purpose” and an Infographic Competition themed “The Role of Youth in Building a Circular Economy.” Both competitions attracted participants from universities across Indonesia.

The event series also included a seminar and talk show titled “Sustainable Tech Innovation: Green Technology for a Resilient Future,” held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the BINUS @Kemanggisan Anggrek Auditorium. The session featured speakers from the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the Special Staff to the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises for Strategic Investment.

Through these activities, BINECA 2025 aimed to broaden the perspectives of students, educators, and the wider community regarding current issues, innovations, and opportunities across various industrial sectors. The event also served as a continuous learning platform that encourages the development of adaptive, innovative, and future-ready young professionals. The presence of SCOTERA stands as concrete evidence of how BINUS Industrial Engineering students translated the concept of sustainability into a practical and impactful engineering product.
