July 16, 2026 – Students from Bunda Hati Kudus Kota Wisata High School, Bogor had the opportunity to explore the field of Industrial Engineering through an interactive trial class organized by the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University. Held at BINUS University – Anggrek Campus, Jakarta and delivered entirely in English, the session introduced students to the basic concepts of Industrial Engineering while providing them with an experience of learning in an academic environment.

The activity was organized through a collaboration between the Industrial Engineering Study Program and the Marketing Department of BINUS University as part of the university’s efforts to introduce its undergraduate programs to prospective students. In addition to promoting awareness of Industrial Engineering, the activity also served as a community development initiative by sharing knowledge and developing students’ understanding of engineering concepts that are relevant to everyday life. The session was delivered by Aditya Andika, S.T.,M.B.A., a lecturer from the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University, accompanied by laboratory assistants Ira Widiastuti and Ailyn Sho, who supported the learning activities.

The session began with a simple but familiar question: What happens after a customer clicks the “Buy” button when shopping online? Using the journey of a T-shirt purchased through an online platform as an example, students were introduced to the role of Industrial Engineering in improving systems that involve people, processes, technology, information, and resources.

Through this interesting scenario, students followed the journey of a product from production to delivery. They learned how products move through different stages, including manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, customs processes, local delivery, and possible returns. The activity helped students understand that behind a simple online purchase, there is a complex system that requires careful planning and coordination.

The session also introduced students to the basic ideas of Supply Chain Management. Instead of presenting supply chain concepts as purely academic theories, the topic was explained through real-life situations that students could easily relate to. They discussed why delivery delays occur, how companies manage inventory, and how decisions are made when facing challenges in business operations.

During the interactive activities, students were encouraged to think from an Industrial Engineering perspective. They explored how companies need to balance different objectives, such as delivery speed, operational costs, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability. Through these discussions, students learned that improving a system often requires considering multiple factors and finding the best possible solution.

The use of English as the language of instruction provided an additional learning experience for the participants. Besides gaining new knowledge about Industrial Engineering, students also practiced following technical discussions and communicating ideas in English. This approach reflects the importance of English skills in higher education and in today’s global professional environment.

The enthusiastic participation of students showed their curiosity and interest in understanding how Industrial Engineering is applied in the real world. Through visual examples, discussions, and problem-solving activities, they discovered that Industrial Engineering is not limited to manufacturing industries but is also highly relevant in areas such as e-commerce, logistics, retail, and global business operations.

By the end of the trial class, students gained a better understanding of Industrial Engineering as a practical and problem-solving discipline. They learned that Industrial Engineers play an important role in designing better systems and improving the way organizations operate.

Through this activity, the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University continues to strengthen its connection with schools and the wider community. By introducing engineering knowledge in an engaging way, the program hopes to inspire students to explore Industrial Engineering as a field of study and develop the skills needed to solve challenges in the future.
