Industrial Benchmarking: Exploring Automotive Manufacturing Through a Company Visit to PT Handal Indonesia Motor
Industrial Benchmarking is an annual program organized by the Industrial Engineering Student Association (HIMTRI) of BINUS University. In 2026, the program carries the theme “A Greener Transformation in Industrial Engineering,” highlighting the importance of understanding the role of Industrial Engineering in creating efficient and sustainable industrial practices.
As part of its activities, HIMTRI BINUS University conducted a company visit to PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM), Purwakarta, on August 26, 2026. The visit provided participants with an opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the working environment and operational activities of a company engaged in automotive manufacturing and vehicle assembly.

The company visit was attended by 53 HIMTRI BINUS University committee members. Throughout the activity, participants were introduced to the history and development of PT Handal Indonesia Motor, including its operational journey as a company involved in the assembly of motor vehicles. The company briefing provided participants with an overview of the organization and its role within the automotive manufacturing industry.
Participants also had the opportunity to observe the vehicle assembly process directly. By seeing the production activities in an actual manufacturing environment, participants could gain a better understanding of how various production stages are coordinated to transform components into finished vehicles.

The direct observation of the production environment allowed participants to connect concepts learned in Industrial Engineering with their practical implementation. The visit provided insights into several aspects of manufacturing operations, including production systems, process efficiency, quality control, occupational safety, and environmental considerations. These experiences offered participants a broader perspective on how different aspects of Industrial Engineering are integrated into real-world industrial operations.
Beyond understanding the technical aspects of production, the visit also highlighted the importance of maintaining efficiency and quality throughout the manufacturing process. Exposure to an actual automotive production environment allowed participants to gain a more practical perspective that complements their academic learning.
The activity was supported by Mr. Budi Santoso, Director of PT Handal Indonesia Motor Purwakarta, and Mr. Ari Destiawan, General Affairs (GA) Manager of PT Handal Indonesia Motor Purwakarta. The activity was also accompanied by Mr. Muhammad Kevin Perdana, S.T., M.T., lecturer from the Industrial Engineering Department of BINUS University. The overall Industrial Benchmarking activities were coordinated by Dante Kareem Mohamad as Project Manager.

The company visit provided participants with valuable exposure to the automotive manufacturing industry and demonstrated how Industrial Engineering principles can be applied within an actual production environment. Through this experience, participants gained a better understanding of the importance of efficiency, quality, safety, and environmental responsibility in modern manufacturing.
