“People don’t realize how disruptive interruptions can be,” said Cyrus Foroughi, a Ph.D. candidate at George Mason University.

Two groups were given time to outline and write an essay on an assigned topic. One group was interrupted multiple times, while a control group was not interrupted. Not surprisingly, the group that suffered from multiple interruptions scored lower on the essays.

“Interruption can cause a noticeable decrement in the quality of work, so it’s important to take steps to reduce the number of external interruption we encounter daily,” said co-author Foroughi.
