INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER – VOLUME 47, NUMBER 5
Today’s engineers face pressure to work faster, must deal with institutional knowledge drain and are challenged by environmental regulations, according to a new global study.
Business information provider HIS surveyed more than 2,100 engineers and technical professionals for “The Pulse of Engineering: The Changing Work Environment for Engineers Today.” Among the report’s findings:
- Fifty-two percent of engineers said the pace of engineering is accelerating, and 57 percent said they are asked to do more with less.
- Respondents agreed that designs are becoming more complex while design cycles are shrinking and time-to-market pressures are increasing.
- About seven in 10 reported that constraints on resources, specialized knowledge, budgets and time jeopardized productivity, product quality and innovation.
- More than 90 percent of respondents cited designing and developing environmentally sustainable products as an important part of their work.
