Automotive industry needs to develop talent to fill gap, report says
Workforce woes are coming to the automotive sector’s supply chain, reported logistics provider DHL.
The analysis, cited by Manufacturing Business Technology magazine, recommended that auto companies strengthen industry collaboration, worker training and career opportunities to offset the worsening talent crisis in their supply chains. The report noted that other manufacturers are seeking these crucial employees even though an aging population and layoffs after the Great Recession eroded the overall workforce.
Available supply chain jobs outnumber qualified graduates by about 6-to-1, according to DHL, a ratio that could grow to 9-to-1 in the future. Not enough workers are entering the field and higher education doesn’t have enough resources to teach supply chain management, the report claimed.
Part of the report encouraged automakers and suppliers to collaborate with academic institutions and trade associations to develop educational programs specifically about the automotive supply chain.
