BINUS Students Win 1st Place at AIGIS 2025 Green Scientific Competition with Solar-Powered Smart Aerator

Jakarta, 31 July 2025 – A team of BINUS University students has successfully won 1st place at the AIGIS Goes to Campus 2025 – Green Scientific Competition, organized by the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia. Their innovative project, Solar-Powered Smart Aerator, addresses sustainability challenges in the aquaculture industry and has been warmly received by the judges for its real-world impact and potential.

The winning team consists of:

  • Nico Chainando (B26, Industrial Engineering)

  • Bangkit Pramesta Yulianto B27, Industrial Engineering)

  • Haryadi Samba Rabbani (B25, Architecture)

From Collaborative Research to Award-Winning Innovation

The project began as part of a collaborative research initiative with Arizona State University (ASU) through the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program, under the project title “Renewable Energy in Indonesia Aquaculture.”

The team conducted field research to understand the challenges faced by Indonesian fish and shrimp farmers, which include:

  • High operational costs

  • Poor water quality

  • Frequent aerator breakdowns due to heat exposure

Inspired by the competition’s focus on renewable energy and green industry, the team further developed their research into a functional prototype. The Solar-Powered Smart Aerator integrates:

  • Solar panels to reduce energy costs and dependence on fossil fuels

  • Smart aeration system for efficient oxygen distribution

  • IoT-based water quality monitoring sensors

  • Digital monitoring platform to help farmers manage their ponds sustainably

By combining renewable energy with intelligent monitoring, the innovation aims to make aquaculture operations more sustainable, cost-effective, and resilient.

Motivation to Join the Competition

The team shared that the Green Scientific Competition provided the perfect platform to showcase their project and gain industry feedback:

“We were motivated to participate because this competition highlights innovation for green industry solutions. Our project is directly aligned with sustainability, and we wanted to not only present our work but also learn from industry professionals,” the team explained.

A Proud Achievement and a Step Forward

Winning 1st place was a moment of pride and gratitude for the team:

“We are very grateful and proud because all the effort we put into research, development, and presentation has paid off. We are also happy that our prototype was well-received and that we gained valuable feedback for further development,” they said.

Message for Fellow Students

The team encourages other students to seize opportunities during their time at BINUS:

“There are so many opportunities at BINUS, sometimes even when you least expect them. Keep exploring, give your best effort, and the results will follow. Stay motivated!”

With this achievement, the Solar-Powered Smart Aerator project demonstrates how BINUS students are leading sustainable innovation, turning local industry challenges into impactful solutions with global potential.
