High School Students from SMAK Kasih Kemuliaan Explore Industrial Engineering Decision-Making Through an Interactive Training Session Delivered in English at BINUS University

July 22, 2026 – How can we choose the best option when every choice has its own advantages and disadvantages? This question became the starting point for high school students from SMAK Kasih Kemuliaan to explore decision-making approaches used in Industrial Engineering during an interactive training session organized by the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University.
Held at BINUS University – Alam Sutera Campus and delivered in English, the session introduced students to the way Industrial Engineers analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions systematically. The training was delivered by Aditya Andika, S.T., M.B.A., a lecturer from the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University, and supported by Ailyn Sho and Siti Wahyuni, Industrial Engineering laboratory assistants. Through a practical case study, participants experienced how Industrial Engineering concepts can be applied to situations that are closely related to their everyday lives.
The activity was designed for high school students who are exploring undergraduate study options in Industrial Engineering. This training was organized through a collaboration between the Industrial Engineering Study Program and the Marketing Department of BINUS University as part of the university’s efforts to introduce academic programs to prospective students. In addition to promoting awareness of Industrial Engineering, the activity also served as a community development initiative by sharing knowledge and developing students’ analytical and problem-solving skills through an engaging learning experience.
During the session, students were presented with a case study based on a situation they could easily imagine: they wanted to organize a school event but were unsure which type of event would be the best choice. Several event alternatives were introduced, each with different advantages and disadvantages. Students were challenged to consider various factors, such as the expected benefits, required resources, level of difficulty, and potential impact, before selecting the most suitable option.
To solve this problem, students were introduced to the weighted scoring matrix, one of the decision-making tools commonly used in Industrial Engineering. They learned how to identify evaluation criteria, assign weights based on the importance of each criterion, and score each alternative in a structured way. Through this process, students discovered how Industrial Engineering provides a systematic approach to making decisions when multiple factors need to be considered.
The interactive learning process encouraged students to actively participate in discussions, exchange ideas, and work together to evaluate different options. Rather than simply finding a single correct answer, students learned that decision-making often involves understanding priorities and selecting the alternative that provides the greatest overall value.
Although the training was conducted in a fun and informal atmosphere, it still showed the importance of Industrial Engineering as an academic field. Students learned basic concepts such as analytical thinking, finding the best solutions, and systematic problem-solving, which can be applied in organizations, businesses, and many professional areas.
The use of English as the medium of instruction also provided students with an opportunity to experience learning in an international academic environment. By engaging with Industrial Engineering concepts in English, participants developed their confidence in understanding technical discussions and communicating ideas using a global language.
By the end of the session, students gained a broader understanding of Industrial Engineering as a practical and problem-solving discipline. They learned that Industrial Engineering is not only applicable in industrial settings but also useful in schools, organizations, and everyday decision-making situations.
Through this training activity, the Industrial Engineering Study Program of BINUS University continues to strengthen its engagement with the community by introducing engineering knowledge through practical applications. By providing high school students with early exposure to Industrial Engineering approaches, the program hopes to inspire them to explore the field further and develop the skills needed to become effective problem solvers in the future.
