HIMTRI together with the IIE Chapter decided to go beyond for the 2013 Study Tour. They went to Singapore to visit some universities which implement the discipline in designing their laboratory (facility layout and human-integrated systems or ergonomics) as well as to learn about the transportation and service systems in Singapore.

With a very early flight, they arrived in Singapore before noon on November 27th and returned to Jakarta on November 29th with a very late flight. What a “time optimization” the committees had done! Big applause is given to the project manager, Darian, and his team (Aditya Jo, Amriyanto, William, Berki, and Satrio) for the tremendous-beyond-imagination efforts they have given to ensure the tour ran smoothly by implementing what they have learnt on campus, from contacting the university’s representatives to utilizing shortest path method to find the optimum path which minimize the total transportation cost. Of course, during the tour there was some incident occurred, yet they managed to solve it in no time. Not to forget to mention the excellent support from all of the participants (BINUSIAN 2014, 2015, and 2016) to the execution of the study tour.

On November 28th, they visited The Logistics Insitute of Asia Pacific (TLI-AP) at National University of Singapore (NUS) – IIE senior chapter, and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Students learnt about systems engineering as well as possibility to pursue higher education in these two institutions. They also visited the laboratories available in the SUTD. As part of the relaxing-your-mind activity, the tour included visit to Universal Studio Singapore, Garden by The Bay, and Marina Bay Sands in which indirectly, the students are exposed to understand about queueing, service, layout, and technology. By taking the MRT to visit various places during the tour, students learnt how various Industrial Engineering concepts are applicable to support humankinds. For example, the application of human-integrated systems for comfortability in the airport and inside the trains and MRT trains scheduling optimization.
